After sprinting through Dragon Quest VIII and the first two games in the Phantasy Star series, I found myself in need of a little break from uber-hardcore Japanese RPGs. It only made sense to seek out something that is the antithesis of a 40+ hour grind: an internet flash game.
The good news is that the internet has a seemingly infinite supply of free flash games. The bad news is that the internet has a seemingly infinite supply of free flash games. So I turn to Kongregate, where scores of the best (and worst) flash games are gathered together in one convenient location.
Kongregate easily sets itself apart from other flash game sites with its badges, which really capture the addictive meta-game quality of chasing Achievements on Xbox 360 (or Trophies on Playstation 3), and the exceptionally helpful user rating tools, which makes it much easier to find the good stuff.
So as a result of the need to cleanse ones gaming-pallet, my first weekly feature is being born today: the nonsensically-named
Spare Time Flash Assassin.
We’re kicking off the new feature with a fantastic game by the Casual Collective. The Space Game is awesome! It blends real-time strategy gameplay with some tower defense and a cool outer space aesthetic. And like any good flash game, it’s pretty easy to learn the basics. However, the difficulty ratchets up pretty quickly; I spent a week’s worth of 20-minute gaming chunks beating the last mission.
Try it out! Click here to play.
